The star of The Lighthorseman had his career cut short in 1986 after a car accident left him paralysed and with permanent brain damage. The accident, which happened near Port Augusta, in South Australia, when the young star was 26 years old, happened as he was driving back after shooting the last sequences of the film, his final and most acclaimed.
Before the accident he had been dubbed ''the next Mel Gibson'' following his success in movies after cutting his acting teeth on roles in TV soaps including The Restless Years and A Country Practice.

During a court case over a compensation claim in 1994, the film producer Hal McElroy described the actor as an ''astonishing young man'' who had an obvious star quality.
''I've seen it in everything he has done: star quality. I think he's talented, and I still see it in his face since the accident, that there is something happening there that's extraordinary and irresistible … to an audience,'' Mr McElroy said.
Mr Blake was awarded $33 million as a result of the accident, but the amount was reduced to $7.7 million on appeal.
His funeral will be held later this week.
