Puthandu is the first day of Tamil New Year and is celebrated as the first day of the Tamil new year. Puthandu falls in the mid of the April month as per English calendar. Puthandu is celebrated by Tamils in India as well as in the Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Singapore, Reunion Island and Mauritius. In India Puthandu is the festival for Tamil Nadu, in Puducherry.
According to Tamil calendar, On Puthandu Sun moves into Nirayana Aries and is the first day of the traditional Tamil calendar. Puthandu is celebrated as a public holiday in Tamil Nadu and Sri Lanka.
Traditional calendars of other states of India like Assam, Bengal, Kerala, Manipur, Orissa, Punjab, Tripura etc. also celebrates their first day on the same day of Puthandu.
Puthandu is the Tamil New Year’s Day and is celebrated in the beginning of the first month in the Tamil Calendar Chithirai. Many people in Tamil Nadu also celebrate Puthandu as the day when Lord Brahma – Hindu God of Creation started creation.
