Andhra Pradesh legislator Akbaruddin Owaisi was injured when rivals opened fired on him here Saturday, sparking tension in the old city of Hyderabad. Police later said his condition was stable.

Another MIM legislator, Ahmed Balala, was also injured when he tried to save Owaisi, a prominent Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (MIM) leader. One of the assailants was shot dead and two were injured by Balala's gunmen.

A profusely bleeding Owaisi was rushed to the Owaisi Hospital in Santosh Nagar.

As tension gripped Hyderabad, Additional Inspector General of Police A.R. Anuradha told reporters outside the hospital that his condition was stable.

AIMIM MLA Akbaruddin Owaisi was attacked at 11:45 am today at Barkas in Chandrayanagutta constituency of Hyderabad. Assailants shot four rounds at Owasi who sat in his Gypsy after finishing a 'Pada Yatra' at Chandrayanagutta. They first attacked him with knives and later shot at him. Malakpet MLA Ahmed Balala was also injured in the attack. Locals say that Owaisi was attacked when he was seated in a Gypsy. Owaisi was shot at chest, left hand, ear and in the stomach.

Akbaruddin was severely injured in the incident. He was admitted in the Owaisi hospital at Santosh Nagar where the doctors have performed a surgery and took out all the four bullets. Hundreds of AIMIM supporters have reached the hospital. Heavy police forces were deployed near the hospital.
