Patiala House Pre-release Review:

After giving a highly-credited directorial debut with ‘Kal Ho Na Ho’, Nikhil Advani still has a long way to prove his mettle as a director considering his next flicks ‘Salaam-E-Ishq’ and ‘Chandni Chowk To China’ bombed at the box-office. With the latest dramedy ‘Patiala House’ lined up for release, Nikhil can only keep his fingers crossed to hit bull’s eye this time. Apparently inspired by England cricket team’s first Sikh player Monty Panesar, the movie has been produced by Bhushan Kumar, Mukesh Talreja, Krishan Kumar, and Twinkle Khanna under the banners People Tree Films Pvt. Ltd., Credence Motion Picture, and Hari Om Entertainment. True to its name, this Punjabi flick is loaded with full-on desi beats composed by the trio Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy and lyricist Anvita Dutt Guptan. ‘Patiala House’ is set to hit theaters on February 11, 2011.

Set back in the year 1979 in Southall, London, Gurtej Singh Kahlon (Rishi Kapoor) is a 34-year old hard-working sardar employed at the Woolfe Rubber Factory. Often criticized and ridiculed for his turban, Gurtej faces relentless taunts by the firangis. But that does not stop him from protecting his family against all odds. The movie fast forwards into the present 2010. Gurtej’s son, Pargat Singh Kahlon aka Gattu (Akshay Kumar) wakes and sees kids playing cricket in the streets, a dream that he had lived throughout his childhood but was crushed into pieces, all thanks to his sardari pagdi, to save his Bauji’s, aka Gurtej’s, reputation. One day, he meets Simran (Anushka Sharma) who encourages him to fulfill his dreams.

Will life give Gattu a second chance to cherish his dream or will he have to remain silent throughout his life as he had been doing all these years? Will he break the rules to challenge his Bauji and the Kahlon khandaan? The father-son duo relationship amongst three generations living under one roof and inclusion of several cricket players is something to watch out here. But will Akshay Kumar be able to win the hearts of his audience, after the major debacle of ‘Teen Maar Khan’? And will Anushka Sharma be successful in firming her place in Bollywood, now that she’s already on cloud 9 with the recent unexpected yet commendable hit ‘Band Baaja Baaraat?
