About India Today Conclave 2011 :

The world is in flux. And primacy, as defined by the equations of the 20th century, is being challenged. In its tenth year, The India Today Conclave addresses as its theme "The changing balance of power" to turn the spotlight on this emerging world order.

Western dominance in industry, the arts, technological innovations and finance is diminishing as Asia rises to take its place. The meaning of power has shifted from the relatively simple arithmetic of the 'bi-polar' or 'unipolar' world. China and India, in particular, have taken a seat at the high table of world affairs through the empowerment wrought by economic momentum.

Terrorists, guerrilla warriors and shadow armies are matching wits and weapons with conventional armies, and often emerging winners. In the workplace professionals are edging out proprietors. An overload of information - casually dispensed by youngsters in T-shirts - threatens the world as the Establishment knows it.

Even leadership is no longer dominated by the elderly; young politicians around the world are taking charge. The power shift is reflected even in the home where the authority of the woman is visibly in the ascendant. India Today Conclave will bring together, as before, the best minds in politics, finance and business, military, technology, academia, and the arts, from around the globe to examine this new world.

PM to inaugurate India Today Conclave :

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh will inaugurate the 10th India Today Conclave at Taj Palace Hotel in the national capital on Friday.

The prime minister, one of the few designated guests to address the latest edition of the conclave, will deliver his speech at 10 am.

Apart from the prime minister, Egypt's Leader of the Opposition and Nobel Peace laureate Mohamed El Baradei, World Wide Web (www) inventor Sir Tim Berners Lee, Union Ministers Jairam Ramesh and Praful Patel, Leader of the Opposition in Rajya Sabha Arun Jaitley, Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan and several other celebrities from different walks of life will address the conclave.

But the highlight of the conclave this year will be Sarah Palin, a former vice-presidential nominee of the Republican Party and governor of Alaska (2006-09). She is the featured keynote speaker at the closing session of the conclave on Saturday, where she will share her vision of America.

"I'm very excited to visit India. Americans have a great respect for the world's largest democracy. India and the United States are partners in trade and business affairs, and working together our two nations can build a more peaceful and prosperous world," Palin told India Today Conclave team ahead of her first visit to India.

Palin, a former beauty queen, is tipped to be a future US president. She had almost given the incumbent, Barack Obama, the jitters in the 2008 US presidential polls by galvanizing women voters. Her visit has attracted attention round the world with all leading American dailies headlining the story.

"The theme for the India Today Conclave is the changing balance of power. And, as our chairman Mr Aroon Purie says, history is a gatecrasher at India Today Conclave," said conclave director Kalli Purie adding, "When we started the conclave in 2002, we had the world trade centre attacks, and the world changed after that. And as we move into the 10th India Today Conclave in 2011, we have all the revolutions in the Middle East which is going to fundamentally change the balance of power in the world."

Talking about Palin's presence at the conclave Kalli Purie said, "She is the first female governor of Alaska and the first female representative of the Republican Party for vice presidential elections in 2008. In many ways she is starting to represent the middle America and whether you agree with her views or disagree with her views, you can't ignore her. She is the perfect choice, we are very excited about her coming and there has been a lot of interest in the international press about it. This is her first visit to India."

Conclave: Day 1

Apart from Palin, Baradei is also expected to be a star attraction at the conclave given the recent popular uprising in Egypt. He will share his experiences of the revolt in Egypt and its ramifications for the world (The new Middle-East: Challenges and opportunities) in his dinner keynote address at 8 pm to conclude the first day of conclave.

The conclave will begin on Friday at 9.45 am with the welcome address by India Today editor-in-chief Aroon Purie, which will be followed by the prime minister's inaugural address.

Representing the world of art, actor Shah Rukh Khan will then deliver a speech on "Movies, magic, life - Making movies work in a brand new decade".

There will be a round-table discussion (Topic: Can conventional armies defeat terrorism?) on conflict resolution with Ashim Chatterjee (former Naxal and leader of Communist Revolutionary League of India), Lt Gen (retd) Jack Jacob (military mastermind and former governor of Punjab and Goa) and Aziz Ahmad Khan (former Pakistan ambassador to Afghanistan and high commissioner to India) on the panel.

In the afternoon, Environment and Forests Minister Jairam Ramesh will deliver a speech on "The way to a Green GDP", followed by a keynote address by Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi on "How can India develop in the next decade".

There will be a round-table discussion on religion (Topic: Has religion destabilised the sub-continent) with Subramanian Swamy (Janata Party president), Aitzaz Ahsan (barrister-politician from Pakistan) and Maulana Mahmood Madani (Jamiat-e-Ulema-e-Hind president) as the panellists.

In the evening there will be a session on politics and ethics (Topic: Is honesty impossible in Indian politics) with senior BJP MP Arun Jaitley, Heavy Industries and Public Enterprises Minister Praful Patel and Congress MP Mani Shankar Aiyar as the participants.

As Japan witnesses a major nuclear crisis, there will be a special session on "The dilemma of nuclear energy". The Japanese Ambassador to India, Akitaka Saiki, and former chairman of Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (India) A. Gopalakrishnan will enrich the gathering on the issue.

Conclave: Day 2

On Saturday, Syed Ali Shah Geelani (All Parties Hurriyat Conference chairman) and Arif Mohammad Khan (Bahujan Samaj Party leader and former Union minister) will debate the hot issue of Kashmir (Kashmir - What next). It will be followed by a discussion (The gender dialogue - Can the burqa co-exist with the bikini) with Germaine Greer (feminist writer) and Fatima Bhutto (writer, journalist and activist from Pakistan) on the panel.

For the IT savvy participants of the conclave there will be a great dish on the platter as the World Wide Web inventor, Sir Tim Berners Lee will debate with the serial hacker, Josh Klein, on "The digital debate" (Information: Revolution or revelation).

Post-lunch, there will be a "next generation workshop" (Ideas: My India, our future) with Sonakshi Sinha (actor), Vijender Singh (Olympic and Asian Games medallist boxer), Anurag Thakur (Lok Sabha MP and BJP youth wing's chief), Sanjiv Bajaj (Bajaj FinServ Ltd managing director), Imtiaz Ali (film director, actor and writer) and Aatish Taseer (author) as the participants.

There will be a business round-table discussion (Politics and business: The odd couple) with Rajeev Chandrasekhar (Rajya Sabha MP and entrepreneur), Arun Shourie (journalist, author and former Union minister) and KP Singh (DLF Limited chairman) on the panel. It will be followed by an address by noted British historian Niall Ferguson on "American decline: Myth and reality".

The final speech of the conclave will be delivered by Sarah Palin at 8 pm. She will be the chief guest for the gala dinner that will follow her address.
