Holi is knocking at the door and with it people are preparing themselves to celebrate this colourful festival with great zeal and enthusiasm. Holi is an ancient festival of India and was originally recognized as ‘Holika’. This year ‘Holi’ falls on 19th and 20th March. It is also known as the ‘festival of colours’ as people play with gulal, coloured waters and balloons.
There are different ways to celebrate this festival like some people celebrate it with the tradition of bhang and by dancing to the rhythm of dholak and sing songs in loudest voice as possible.
On the other hand Children celebrate it by throwing coloured filled balloons at passersby and if anybody scolds them for throwing the balloons they said their traditional answer, ‘Bura na mano Holi hai’.
In some parts of India, especially in Bengal and Orissa, Holi Purnima is also celebrated as the birthday of Shri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu.
The word ‘Holi’ suggests us ‘burning’. There are various legends to makes clear the sense of this word, among them the most well-known is the legend related with demon king Hiranyakashyap.
Another related legend includes Lord Krishna, Shiva and Kaamadeva. All describe victory of good over evil, which provides a viewpoint to the festival.
